The processing of sheet metal is referred to as sheet metal fabrication. Specific examples include using sheet metal to manufacture chimneys, iron barrels, fuel tanks, oil cans, ventilation ducts, elbows with varying diameters, circular-to-rectangular transitions, funnel-shaped structures, etc. The primary processes involve shearing, bending and flanging, curved forming, welding, riveting, etc., requiring certain geometric knowledge. Sheet metal components refer to thin-gauge hardware parts, which are workpieces that can be processed through stamping, bending, stretching, and other methods. A general definition encompasses parts that maintain consistent thickness during the manufacturing process.

In contrast to castings, forgings, and machined parts, cold working of metal typically refers to the machining process where cutting tools remove excess metal layers from raw materials (blanks) or workpieces. This method enables the workpiece to achieve specific shapes, dimensional accuracy, and surface roughness. Such as turning, drilling, milling, planing, grinding, broaching, etc. In metallurgical technology, in contrast to hot working, cold working refers to the process of inducing plastic deformation in metals below the recrystallization temperature, such as cold rolling, cold drawing, cold forging, stamping, cold extrusion, etc. Cold working exhibits high deformation resistance. While shaping the metal, it can utilize work hardening to enhance the hardness and strength of the workpiece, but at the cost of reduced plasticity. Cold working is suitable for processing metal parts with small cross-sectional dimensions, high requirements for machining dimensions, and superior surface roughness.
